Michael Waul, MD
I am an assistant professor, medical student career advisor, associate residency program director, and wellness champion in the Department of Dermatology at UCSF. I am an active member of the Mount Zion community with a robust clinical practice, education and leadership roles, and research activities located on the Mount Zion campus.
My academic work improves the experiences and elevates the voices of underrepresented people in medicine through innovation in recruitment and retention; optimizing trainee wellbeing; and curriculum development. Current research focuses on the Inclusive Skin Color project, in collaboration with the School of Medicine's Anti-Oppression Curriculum Initiative. This endeavor advances medical education and enhances patient care by increasing access to resources showcasing the full spectrum of skin color. My additional research includes developing and implementing a restorative justice framework to build community and address minority trainee burnout.
I serve on the diversity, equity, inclusion and antiracism task force of the Association of Professors of Dermatology. I am also a member of the Skin of Color Society, an international organization committed to educating health care providers and the general public on dermatologic issues related to skin of color.
