Study of genetic polymorphism in organ transplant recipients that increase susceptibility to skin cancer

UCSF and the National Institute of Health are sponsoring a study to find out why organ transplant patients develop more skin cancers than the general population. Patients are asked to provide a blood sample and answer a questionnaire. Study organizers are also interested in reviewing past medical records and re-analyze old biopsy specimens with new types of tests that might reveal information about why skin cancer occurs so frequently in transplant recipients. Investigators involved in this study include Ervin Epstein, MD (UCSF Dermatology); Boris Bastian, MD (UCSF Dermatology); and Ryo Hirose, MD (UCSF Transplant Surgery).
