  • Measurement and Improvement of Outcomes in Chronic Diseases

Dr. Chren is interested in improving the quality of care of chronic diseases, especially skin conditions. Her studies are examples of health services research, which refers to investigations that use techniques from the social sciences, epidemiology, and biostatistics, to address research questions related to the quality of health care. Chronic diseases are especially challenging to study because they often affect the quality of patients' lives rather than only their survival, so to examine 'how patients are doing' with their diseases and our treatments, their complex health outcomes such as quality of life and functioning must be assessed. Her research unit is currently conducting a large study of outcomes in nonmelanoma skin cancer, the most common malignancy. Dr. Chren also directs a multidisciplinary health services research program at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center (SF VAMC), directed to studying and improving the care of older patients. In addition to her research, she sees patients in a longitudinal continuity clinic at the SF VAMC, where she follows patients with a wide variety of chronic skin conditions.
